Standard Height or Counter Height?
Two heights dominate dining furniture:
- Standard dining height — table is about 30″ tall, chairs are about 18″ tall. This is the formal-dining default.
- Counter height — table is about 36″ tall, chairs are about 24″ tall. Casual, often paired with bar-style backs. Great for open-concept rooms that flow into a kitchen island.
Bar height (table 42″, chairs 30″) also exists but is more common in pub-style or kitchen islands than dedicated dining rooms.
How Many People Do You Need to Seat?
Pick a table that fits your everyday number with room to add chairs for guests:
- 4-seater — round 36-44″ or rectangular 48-54″ long.
- 6-seater — rectangular 60-72″ long, or round/oval 54-60″ wide.
- 8-seater — rectangular 78-96″ long.
- 10+ seats — look for an extension table with one or two leaves so you can shrink it back down for daily use.
Table Shape
- Rectangular — the standard. Great for long rooms and large family meals.
- Round — everyone can see everyone. Best for smaller, square rooms and intimate dinners.
- Square — uncommon but striking. Best for small, square dining rooms.
- Oval — the conversational benefits of round with a bit more capacity.
- Extension tables — have a removable leaf so you can size up for holidays and shrink back for weeknights.
Chairs, Benches, and Bar Stools
- Dining chairs come upholstered or wood; armchairs at the head, side chairs around the rest.
- Dining benches work well on one or both long sides — fits more kids in a hurry and slides under the table when not in use.
- Bar stools pair with counter or bar-height tables and kitchen islands.
Storage: Buffets, Servers, and Dining Storage
A buffet (also called a server or sideboard) lives in the dining room or adjacent space. Use the top for serving on holidays and the storage below for serving pieces, table linens, and seasonal decor. Pair it with a hutch for a complete china-cabinet look.

Dining Room FAQs
How many people fit at each table size?
4 seats: 48-54″ rectangular or 36-44″ round. 6 seats: 60-72″ rectangular or 54-60″ round. 8 seats: 78-96″ rectangular. Add 2 more with an extension leaf.
Counter height vs standard height — which should I pick?
Standard height (30″ table, 18″ chairs) feels more formal and works well for long meals. Counter height (36″ table, 24″ chairs) is more casual, makes the space feel airier, and visually connects with kitchen counters and islands. Choose based on the vibe of your home — both seat the same number of people.
How many dining chairs should I buy?
Match the chair count to the seating capacity of the table. A 6-seater table needs 6 chairs (often 2 armchairs at the heads and 4 side chairs). Some sets include a bench instead of side chairs — popular for families with kids.
Round or rectangular — which is better?
Round tables encourage conversation (everyone faces in) and work well in square rooms. Rectangular tables fit more people, work in long rooms, and pair naturally with benches. If your room is square, go round; if it’s long, go rectangular.
What’s the difference between a buffet, a server, and a sideboard?
Effectively the same piece — a long, lower storage cabinet for the dining room. Buffet is the most common term; server and sideboard are interchangeable. Add a hutch on top for a china-cabinet look.
